82 Effects Optimized for Acoustic Sounds The PX4A contains Body effects that model the resonances and vibrational character of great acoustic guitars. Aspects such as guitar construction and body size are modeled in painstaking detail for numerous guitars, ranging from famous brands of the past through today's leading-edge manufacturers. The direct sound from piezo pickups can tend to have a sterile character, but the Korg PX4A's effects add the distinctive warmth of resonating wood that is typical of an acoustic guitar, producing an extremely rich and natural sound.
The effects of the PX4A extend beyond the conventional boundaries of the electric-acoustic guitar and include models for resonator guitar, a newly developed banjo, and nylon-string guitar - in other words, you can play a wide variety of acoustic sounds using just a single instrument. There are also mic' effects built in to the guitar effects processor that simulate the sense of space and depth achieved by mic'ing an instrument. With the Korg PX4A, mic'ing techniques that require years of experience and knowledge can be utilized easily by anyone, delivering superbly rich acoustic sound even when using a line output. There are also numerous other effects included in the PX4A multi-effects processor, ranging from standard sounds such as compressor, limiter, echo, delay, reverb, and chorus, through distinctive effects such as a twelve-string effect that reproduces the sound of a twelve-string guitar, and even a drone effect that simulates the drone tones of ethnic instruments such as a tambura. With a virtually infinite number of possibilities that still preserve your natural acoustic sound; the PX4A is the ideal guitar effects processor for anything and everything from home recording to live performances.
100 Programs to Select The PX4A provides 50 preset programs, covering a broad range of styles including sounds of famous artists. You can also create and store 50 of your own user programs.
Auto Notch Function Automatically Detects the Feedback Point The Korg PX4A's Notch effect helps curtail the feedback or howling effect that can be a problem for amplified acoustic instruments. There's also an Auto-Notch function that automatically detects the frequency at which feedback is occurring, so you can perform with the best acoustic sound at all times without being troubled by feedback.
Amp-like Ease of Operation The user interface of the PX4A guitar effects processor is knob-based for intuitive and easy use. Frequently used parameters, such as the amp type, have their own independent dial, and the tone controls can be adjusted just as easily as on a guitar or bass amp simply by turning the knobs. The value dial makes it simple to adjust amp types and parameter values, and there is also a TAP button that you can use to set delay times or the tempo of a rhythm pattern.
100 Rhythm and Bass Patterns The one hundred rhythm patterns built in to this versatile multi-effects processor cover a broad range of styles that include rock, jazz, funk, blues and dance music. The PCM sounds used in these patterns produce realistic accompaniments that are fun to play along with. There are also Bass patterns that let you specify the key chord, so you can practice any style of music while listening to a full rhythm and bass line. Since you can use the effect programs at the same time as these bass patterns, it becomes a great way to practice your picking, improve your rhythm and develop your sense of pitch. In addition to bass patterns, you can also make Chain Pattern settings to combine up to sixteen different rhythm patterns.
Built-in Phrase Trainer You can record up to 30 seconds of an audio source such as a CD, MD or MP3, and play it back repeatedly (looped) at a slower speed without changing the pitch. This is a great way to learn complex or rapid passages by ear, since you will be able to hear the phrase slowly. You can also record your own phrase along with the built-in rhythm and bass accompaniment, and then practice soloing over the top of it.
Combine Your Playing with an External Source You can connect a CD player or another external audio source to the PX4A guitar effects processor's AUX IN jack, and use the Key Transpose function to change the pitch of the song upward or downward by as much as one octave.
Semitransparent LCD for Superb Visibility The LCD that displays the names of effects and programs is backlit so you can read it easily even on a dimly lit stage, and Icons designed to represent numerous functions are immediately recognizable. The display uses a semitransparent LCD so that characters and icons are lit up when backlit, providing a distinctive appearance. The unit also comes with a strap holder so that you can attach it directly to your instrument strap.

WINTER NAMM SHOW, ANAHEIM, CA, January 17, 2008 — Alex Skolnick’s reputation as one of today’s finest and most versatile guitarists has been well earned. His ever-expanding guitar techniques and solo ideas come from his varied list of project collaborations, starting as a metal guitarist with Testament. Since then, he has shown himself to be equally at home in several different genres: among others, thrash metal with a reunited Testament; theatrical progressive rock with Trans-Siberian Orchestra and in collaboration with Jim Steinman; and tight post-bop trio jazz with his own Alex Skolnick Trio, among other projects.
Recently, Skolnick has added Korg’s Pandora PX5D to his setup, and he has been extensively utilizing it for a multitude of practice, recording and live applications. Says Skolnick, “For practice, I use the phrase trainer to record my favorite licks, slow them down at pitch and learn them at a comfortable tempo. This helps to absorb the lick in a healthy way. It’s a quick, effective way to develop your playing.” He continues, “For live performance, the PX5D gives you access to different tones and backing which are very fun to play over, and for recording, it works great with other applications like GarageBand, etc., by giving you a much wider range of sounds than you’d have otherwise.”
The PX5D has already found its way into other recent recording applications, as Skolnick explains: “I've also been using it to develop ideas for studio recording sessions. With eighty seconds of memory, I can loop a section of a song and play over it until I have a part I like. On a recent recording session, I set up my own separate station in the back of the control room. While the engineer was editing, loading the next song or taking a break, I’d be reviewing and developing ideas with the PX5D. When it was time to track, I was much better prepared.”
Korg’s new Pandora PX5D personal multi-effects processor and USB recording interface is the newest member of Korg’s popular Pandora series known for packing dozens of realistic modeling effects and a multitude of live, practice and recording functions into pocket-sized units. The PX5D is the first computer-ready Pandora (via USB) for direct recording, and offers new features such as footswitch control for live use, various new models and effects and enhanced editing/modulation capability.
