Configuring Logic Audio
You'll configure Logic
Audio a little differently depending on whether you're using
Windows or MacOS computers, and depending on whether you're
using OASYS PCI as your main audio I/O hardware, or as a
synthesizer and effects processor alongside another audio
I/O card.
Windows
If you will be using OASYS
PCI as your main audio I/O hardware, start with
Configuring
MIDI, and then
move on to Configuring
Audio. When you've
completed those steps, you're done.
If you will be using OASYS
PCI as a synthesizer and effects processor in conjunction
with another audio I/O card, such as the MOTU 2408, just
follow the instructions under Configuring
MIDI. Next, check
out the information in Setting
Up OASYS PCI For Use With Other Audio
Cards. After that,
you're done!
MacOS
If you will be using OASYS
PCI as your main audio I/O hardware, start with
Configuring
OMS. After
completing those instructions, move on to Configuring
MIDI, and then to
Configuring
Audio. When you've
completed those steps, you're done.
If you will be using OASYS
PCI as a synthesizer and effects processor in conjunction
with another audio I/O card, such as the MOTU 2408, start
with Configuring
OMS, and then move
on to Configuring
MIDI. Next, check
out the information in Setting
Up OASYS PCI For Use With Other Audio
Cards. After that,
you're done!

Configuring OMS (MacOS)
Install OMS
(MacOS)
On MacOS computers, you
will need to install OMS before using Logic with OASYS PCI.
It is best to install OMS before installing OASYS PCI; this
ensures that the OASYS PCI installer places all OMS-related
files in the appropriate places on your disk.
For more information on
installing OMS, and on setting up OASYS PCI with OMS, please
see OASYS
PCI and OMS.
Enable OMS in Logic
(MacOS)
For use with the OASYS PCI
on MacOS computers, Logic Audio should be set to use OMS as
its MIDI system.See the Logic Audio manual for more
information.
1. Select
Options->Settings->MIDI Interface
Communication.
2. Check the "Use OMS If
Available" option.
Logic will now use OMS as
its MIDI system.
New files will
automatically include the OASYS PCI as a MIDI device.
Previously created files will need to be updated. To do
this:
1. Open the Environment
window.
2. In the Environment
window's Options menu, select Update OMS
Equivalents.
The OASYS PCI will be
added as a MIDI device within the environment.
Logic Audio 4.7 and
later: OMS and Logic Native Drivers can run
simultaneously
Version 4.7 of Logic Audio
adds the ability to use OMS and Logic's native MIDI drivers
at the same time. Users report success when using this
feature with OASYS PCI.
To avoid MIDI errors, make
sure that MIDI instruments are not duplicated between the
OMS Setup and Logic's native drivers. A single MIDI device
should only be in one or the other. You may need to edit
your OMS Setup to delete any duplicate MIDI
devices.
Also, make sure that OMS
and Logic's native drivers are not both set to use the same
physical MIDI interfaces. For instance, if you have a single
MIDI interface, it may be used by either Logic's native
drivers or via OMS, but not both at the same
time.

Configuring MIDI
MacOS: Configure OMS
first
On MacOS computers, make
sure to follow the instructions above for configuring
OMS. After
completing those steps, continue as described
below.
Set up MIDI
patch-through
OASYS PCI can connect
directly to a MIDI interface (for standalone operation), or
can use a sequencer's MIDI thru function for MIDI input.
When used with a sequencer, you need to disable OASYS PCI's
direct connection to the MIDI interface. To do
this:
1. Open the OASYS PCI
Editor program.
2. In the Edit menu,
select "Preferences."
The Preferences window
will appear.
3. Click on the
MIDI/Global tab.
The MIDI/Global
preferences page will appear.
4. Turn off the checkbox
labeled "Editor Responds to OMS/FreeMIDI Controllers"
(MacOS) or "Editor Responds to MIDI Controllers"
(Windows).
This is similar to the
Local On/Off parameter found on some synthesizers. Turning
it off means that the OASYS PCI will not directly receive
MIDI from MIDI controllers. Instead, it will only respond to
MIDI patched through from other MIDI programs.
This setting prevents
various strange things from happening, including phasing,
hung notes, and notes cutting off prematurely.
5. In Logic, enable MIDI
patch-through.
This will patch the MIDI
output of your controller through to the OASYS
PCI.
Enable
MIDI Clock
For use with OASYS PCI's
tempo-based effects, Logic needs to send MIDI clocks to
OASYS PCI. To enable this:
1. Select
Options->Settings->Synchronisation
Settings.
The Synchronisation
Settings dialog will appear.
2. Select the MIDI
tab.
The MIDI synchronisation
settings will appear.
3. Select the box to the
right of Transmit MIDI Clock, so that it is
checked.
4. Select OASYS PCI A from
the menu.
Logic will now send MIDI
Clock to the OASYS PCI.
After configuring
MIDI...
If you will be using OASYS
PCI as your main audio I/O hardware, move on to
Configuring
Audio.
If you will be using OASYS
PCI as a synthesizer and effects processor in conjunction
with another audio I/O card, such as the MOTU 2408, check
out the information in Setting
Up OASYS PCI For Use With Other Audio
Cards.

Configuring Audio
If you are using MacOS,
skip to Select
OASYS PCI as the ASIO
device, below. If
you are using Windows, read on for important
information.
Windows: choice of ASIO
or MME
Under Windows, you can use
OASYS PCI as Logic's audio hardware in one of two ways: via
ASIO, or via MME. With Logic Audio version 4.6 and later, we
recommend using ASIO for its improved performance and lower
latency. With Logic Audio versions 4.5 and earlier, we
recommend using MME.
For information on setting
up OASYS PCI as the ASIO device, see below; for information
on using MME devices, see the Logic Audio
manuals.
IMPORTANT: With
OASYS PCI version 1.0 and 1.02, some users reported
difficulty in selecting OASYS PCI as an ASIO device in some
Windows programs, including Logic Audio and Reaktor, when
Cubase VST was *not* installed on the computer.
This is now fixed in OASYS
PCI software version 2.0. If you have not yet upgraded to
version 2.0, there is a simple workaround; see
Cannot
select as ASIO device in Windows
95/98/ME for more
information.
Windows: When using ASIO,
do not select OASYS PCI as the default Windows audio
device
Even when Logic Audio is
set to use only ASIO for audio, it apparently still accesses
the default Windows audio device during start-up. This can
cause Logic to crash, or not be able to access the card via
ASIO, when OASYS PCI is selected as both the default audio
device and Logic's ASIO device.
To avoid this, when using
OASYS PCI with Logic via ASIO, make sure that OASYS PCI is
not selected as the default Windows audio device.
Select
OASYS PCI as the ASIO device (MacOS and Windows)
1. Select Audio->Audio
Preferences.
The Audio Preferences
dialog will appear.
2. Optional: under Global,
make sure that Release Audio In Background If Stopped is not
checked.
This is not completely
necessary, but since you will be switching back and forth
between Logic and the OASYS PCI Editor, it may be more
convenient.
3. Select Audio Driver
from the menu at the top of the Preferences
dialog.
The Audio Driver
preferences will appear.
4. Select the ASIO
checkbox, so that it is checked.
5. Click the triangle to
the left of the ASIO checkbox, to show the ASIO
preferences.
6. In the Current Device
menu, select OASYS PCI.
If OASYS PCI does not
appear in the menu, see the FAQ entry Cannot
select OASYS PCI in audio/MIDI
program.

7. For 24-bit operation,
select the 20/24 Bit Recording checkbox.
Displaying audio channel
names in Logic Audio
By default, Logic Audio
will show basic numerical names for the inputs and outputs
of OASYS PCI. Below is a table showing how these names map
onto OASYS PCI's actual I/O.

You can set these names
however you like, if desired. To do so:
1. Select Audio->Audio
Configuration.
The Audio Configuration
window will appear.
2. In the window's View
menu, select I/O Labels.
The labels for all of the
audio input and output channels will appear. There are
separate labels for each input and output, and also separate
labels for mono and stereo channels.
3. To set the labels as
desired, select Long I/O Label for each input and output,
mono and stereo, and enter the desired
name.

Premiere Plug-In Previews (MacOS)
On MacOS computers,
Premiere plug-in previews are routed through the Sound
Manager, so they will play through the audio hardware
selected in the Sound control panel (such as the Mac's
built-in audio).

Setting the word clock source
In Logic Audio, the word
clock source is set in File > Preferences > Audio
Extensions.
Make sure that the
program's sample rate matches the external clock
source
When you record or play
back audio data using external clock sources (such as the
S/PDIF, ADAT, or Word Clock inputs), the sample rate is
controlled entirely by the external source, and not by the
digital audio program's sample rate parameter. Because of
this, you must make sure that the external clock source is
actually set to the same sample rate as the digital audio
program. If the two are different, it can result in audio
playing back faster or slower than expected.
