SOUND on SOUND: Unlimit Your Creativity
By Laura B. Whitmore

Wouldn’t it be great to harness the power of unlimited recording tracks, advanced features, pro-level effects and more all in a unit that fits into your pocket? Now you can with the new Korg SOUND on SOUND Unlimited Track Recorder. Think about it. Now you will NEVER run out of tracks. When an idea strikes you can follow your muse without worrying about setting up new tracks, or running into limits. Who doesn’t like the sound of that?

But wait, let’s step back a minute before we take a giant leap forward! The SOUND on SOUND (SOS for short) is a handy, palm-sized recorder that lets you overdub as many parts as you want. Construct the coolest compositions ever from whatever building blocks you choose.

As it records, the SOS saves each of your overdubs separately as WAV files. Then, if you want to import them collectively or individually into your DAW for further processing and tweaking, you have unlimited flexibility! Each track file is BWF (Broadcast Wave Format) encoded, so all the timing info is included. That way you can be sure that all your individual overdubs start and end just where you want them to if you are using a BWF compatible DAW like Pro Tools, Logic and many others. All that technical jargon means you can record whatever suits your fancy and know that the SOS will keep your tracking on time and in sync!

Did I just say fancy?! Well, speaking of, the SOS has some tricked out features that you’ll fall in love with. First of all, it’s jam packed with all the stuff you’d want in a recording studio. You get 100 pro-quality effects, including mastering effects, guitar effects, amp models, and more. Fifty rhythms with variations are on board that you can use as a guide or as a finished rhythm track. Advanced recording features allow for unlimited undo, loop recording and even Sound Stretch, so you can record slower and then speed up the sound without affecting the pitch. It’s also a great study aid for learning songs and solos. The SOS even has a built-in tuner, so there’s no excuse not to sound good!

Near and dear to my heart is the included high-quality stereo condenser microphone (ok, I’m a vocalist, what can I say?). Securely mounted inside the unit, the mic’s broad frequency response realistically captures whatever you’re recording. You can adjust not only the input level, but also the Tone, Low Cut, and Noise Gate settings of your sound input. You can also plug in your own external mic via the microphone jack, or connect your guitar directly using the dedicated guitar input. There’s also a line in for connecting any other audio device you desire. Super cool and convenient is the built-in monitor speaker, so you can review your recording on the spot.

The SOS has intuitive buttons and controls that give you easy access to its many features. It even includes a touchscreen display for real-time control of song playback position, level adjustment, effect parameters, and rhythm patterns simply by touching your fingertip directly to the screen. With over 10 hours of battery life and free audio utility software, the SOS will be your go-to idea catcher and practice aid in no time. Check it out and unlimit your creativity now!

P.S. OK, there is one limit the lawyers insisted I tell you. It’s the size of the microSD card you use to record to – up to 16 GB. But that gives you over 26 track hours per card. Limit? I don’t think so!!
